Task may be delegated to Max, Rich, Ray, or Henry, e.g. In some places the chain is shown: e.g. Rich/Ray/Henry. 2. dates are approximate, but we hope they are reasonable... ------------------------------------------------------------- Details from above list: * decision on fiber & termination We have samples from NetOptics and Anicom. Although the NetOptics cables appear to work properly, we have made the decision to avoid this vendor in the future, given their track record. Max will get more samples (from other vendors) and discuss the choice of cable (0 halogen, core-locked) with the manufacturer: Optical Cable. We'd like to sign-off on the cable so that the bid becomes a bid for the cable terminations. The choice of this ST connector is very important as well, so Max and JJ will do more research on this. Max will perform tests on the available cables, including: 1) install in cable carrier and recheck optical props. 2) Dervin Allen crush test 3) gravity test: hang long cable from b0 balcony in 100' loops. Test for light loss. 4) various flexing, crimping tests including tight bend and repeated flexing. Test for light loss. 5) yank on connectors & breakout portion of cables. Test for light loss. 6) what else? These tests are supposed to help us approve the cable choice before sending out for bids. * decision on splitter box Since the SVXII has 36 FIBS, it has 144 data Glinks and we need nominally 72 2-channel splitter boxes. If we end up with 1 SRC controlling 8 FFO, we will need to split these signals as well (2 more splitter boxes). We think 10% spare boxes plus 10% parts plus a ST termination kit would be appropriate to purchase at the same time. Each 2-channel box costs roughly $500. The connector of the splitter box is very important, and will be looked into further. Jeff Andresen has splitters from AMP and Gould. Both seem adequate and final testing is underway at FCC. Henry points out that good labelling on the front panels is really important. Perhaps the vendor can customize that a bit for us? The splitter box bid will be prepared by Max and Jeff Andresen. BER testing of the splitter is taking place now at FCC with AMP splitter boxes. Last night, a BER of <10e-14 was attained. They will now run for 5 days for final BER validation. * testing at B0 Rob Roser is expecting the first racks to arrive next week, and is willing to position (no electrical power) at least one rack in the final position for the splitter racks on the 1st floor while they commence rack setup on the 2nd floor. Thus Henry, Rich, and Ray could work on the splitter layout until Rob's rack installation physically reaches them, near the end of June. At that point, they would need to clear out to allow the other work to proceed. Rich says he should have all his parts by 6/1, but will start bringing things over with him as they become available. Jeff Andresen will provide AMP splitters for this testing. ------- List of questions: 1) Do we need splitter boxes for the SRC->FFO link? If so, how many? --> Colin 2) What is the ST connector choice for the SRC front panel? Do we want to use the same type/brand for our cables? --> Colin 3) Propagation time difference between channels and tolerance for the SVT. Henry believes it must be less than 10 ns, but will recheck this. To measure this accurately, we need an OTDR which may or may not be available at FNAL. ********** We'll plan to meet again around 6/1/98.
